Why Sex Appeal?

Appealing to the human senses to make profit has been around for centuries. Getting the consumer interested in the product is the main focus of any business. The way this is done by the use of rhetoric. Advertisers examine what people like and then incorporate it into their ads. This is where sex intervenes. It may be a young boy and girl just holding hands to promote a candy store, or it could be Marvin Gaye singing a smooth R & B love song to give women a taste of his new CD. Does this method work? Yes, we see it, we believe, and we buy it.
Through the designs of naughty Mother Nature, our eyes are automatically drawn to the sight of an attractive female/male form. This style of rhetoric is called pathos. Pathos style forms of rhetoric appeal to men and women on a personal level, because it connects to what they like. Nothing draws the eye so well; sex is the only thing that almost everyone in the world shares an interest in. The use of sensuality, appealing colors, shapes, provocative glances from windswept model types, and close up shots of mouths, is fundamentally great for advertising. Sex has always and will sell.
